Shawn Addicott

Long before I became a therapist, I fought my own battle with addiction. I know the shame that makes you want to disappear. The fear of being found out. The 3 a.m. panic when you realize you've lost control again. The feeling that you've messed up your last chance.

I also know what recovery looks like when it's done one honest step at a time. Not through lectures or judgment, but through real understanding and practical tools that actually work.

My own journey through addiction and recovery is what drove me to become a therapist. I wanted to be the person I needed during my darkest moments: someone who truly understood, who wouldn't flinch at my story, and who could help me find a way forward.

Kindred Spirit Award

Presented to Shawn Addicott

November 2018 · Kitchener Downtown Community Health Centre

Recognized for compassion and dedication to community service in the Waterloo Region

Presented in partnership with ROOF, YWCA, and Ray of Hope, in recognition of outstanding work to support peers experiencing homelessness.

Frontline experience that matters

Beyond my clinical training, my work includes frontline roles in emergency shelter and correctional settings, as well as close collaboration with community-based social services across Ontario. I've seen addiction at its most severe stages. I understand crisis, homelessness, trauma, relapse cycles, and the real barriers people face.

This isn't something I learned from textbooks. I've sat with men in their lowest moments. I've helped people navigate the justice system while fighting to stay sober. I've seen what works and what doesn't in the real world.

When you work with me, you're not getting theory. You're getting someone who is battle-tested and who genuinely understands the emotional complexity of recovery.

What makes my approach different

Lived experience

I've walked the same path. I understand the shame, the fear, and the exhaustion because I've felt it myself.

No judgment, ever

Relapse happens. Bad decisions happen. You won't get lectures here, just real support and practical help.

Trauma-informed care

Addiction rarely exists alone. I understand the underlying pain and help you address it safely.

Real tools, real results

Not just talking. We build concrete strategies, relapse prevention plans, and skills you can use today.

A space where you don't have to pretend

When you walk through my door, or connect online, you can drop the mask. You can be honest about how bad things have gotten without worrying about being judged or making me uncomfortable.

I've heard it all. Nothing you say will shock me. And nothing you've done makes you unworthy of help.

What I believe about recovery

These aren't just words on a wall. They're principles I live by in every session.

1

It's okay to be broken

Addiction is a response to pain, stress, and circumstances. It doesn't define your worth or your potential. You're overwhelmed, not beyond help.

2

Relapse is not failure

Setbacks happen on the road to recovery. They don't erase your progress. They're learning opportunities, not reasons to give up.

3

Recovery is possible

No matter how many times you've tried before. No matter how long you've been struggling. Change is possible when you have the right support.
